Grace & Moji’s latest single Monster is guaranteed to be one of the most genuine and open-hearted songs of our days. The husband-wife duo from Los Angeles started working on this track after a drunk argument, and the result is an indie pop song with a lucid self-awareness and an authentic view on personal growth and shadow work.

This track is a raw and genuine indie pop gem that delves deep into the complexities of relationships and healing. Grace & Moji have crafted a heartfelt and introspective song that resonates with anyone who has experienced the light and darkness within themselves and their relationships, but they produced such a sparkling melody that it makes Monster very easy to listen to, as if to show light-heartedness in the face of everyday drama, with the mellow quality of the song inviting contemplation.

This reminded me a bit of Gotye’s Somebody That I Used To Know, with the couple’s vulnerability and raw emotions on full display, quickly pulling listeners into the narrative through its lyrical relatability and musical accessibility.

Nolo Grace and Martin Wave, the artistic forces behind Grace & Moji, found themselves exploring not only the layers of their relationship but also their individual identities during the lockdown period following their swift marriage. This unconventional start to their union paved the way for a unique exploration of the unconscious dynamics within their relationship, resulting in a song that’s both sincere and unusual, honest and yet uplifting (as the two don’t always go together).

The guitar riffs, steady drums, swooshing synths and airy “doo-doo” softly sung by Grace make the upbeat tempo contrast with the song’s introspective theme, creating a balance that mirrors the complexities of human emotions. Meanwhile, the lines about all their trips to Bali, those meditations and self-explorations which haven’t healed away the wounds reveal their commitment to authenticity in exploring the shadow aspects of themselves and unapologetically normalising the duality within us all, which also serves as a reminder that personal evolution is not as easy as it seems and that acknowledging and confronting these aspects is a crucial part of personal growth.

Nolo Grace’s background, marked by a passion for music and a journey through various career paths, adds depth to her and the duo’s artistic expression, while Martin Wave’s impressive music production career and multi-instrumentalist talents bring a rich sonic landscape to their collaboration.

Grace & Moji‘s desire to explore and experiment is becoming their signature. Monster is an intimate exploration of self, love, and personal growth, and its genuine and nuanced lyrics, mellow musicality, and dynamic composition make it a standout in the indie pop landscape, while encouraging you to embrace all aspects of yourself and work to turn them into something better instead of romanticising what isn’t romantic at all.

This couple’s willingness to embrace their own inner monsters, as they literally do in their music video, reminds us all that we are beautifully complex beings and that accountability, acceptance and communication are fundamental when it comes to love. Grace & Moji’s full EP is coming out in November and we hope they’ll keep examining their identities and the dynamics of their relationship while exploring each other’s creativity, as the outcome is just great for us and them.

Space Discovery: Madebit

Madebit’s latest album An Alien Among Us really takes us on a sonorous journey and exploration of the relationship between inner and outer space. This is probably the most dynamic, eclectic album I’ve listened to this year, and Nashville-based singer and producer Madelyn Reyes, aka Madebit, truly is one of the greatest artists we’ve discovered so far.

The creative question that gave origin to this album is how to take the feelings of being an outsider and turn them into ways you can connect with other people. Blending pop, indie, electronic and world music, Madebit experimented with sonic as well as human identity. This album offers a sort of synesthetic experience in which we can see and touch the music we’re listening to as it travels through space and time the same way our soul does, acquiring different characters and new shades as it goes.

As if experimenting with herself in an attempt to figure out what fits her as an individual and where and how she fits among the others, Madebit played with multifaceted and avant-garde sounds and melodies, achieving an outcome that doesn’t give her a fixed identity but rather it defines her kaleidoscopic character.

The 12-track album opens with Space, a spacey melody of synths and dreamy vocals with a poetical indie flavour that sucks you in to take you on a trip of multi-coloured sounds and stories, where you’ll probably figure out how fluid yourself and the rest are, and that’s where you’ll find the connection button.

Madebit is indeed a master of musical tension between dreamy pop and darker hypnotic sounds. Sandy Beaches is like a galactic travel through a tunnel, with acid synths and a rhythmic refrain which makes it very hooky. Moon Dance has a sort of an electronically ritualistic vibe to it, while Bring It Out travels more towards the pop dimension, with an exotic flavour given by the percussions and high-pitched synths.

Intermission has an epic sound instead, like that of a medieval ballad, while the pitchy sounds and continuous hum that slides through the notes of An Ode To Those Who Lead But Do Not Follow are guaranteed to keep you enthralled. A Sound Is Born sums up the essence of the whole album, starting with glossy synths and ending with more of a cavernous sound.

Ultimately, An Alien Among Us examines a range of moods and emotions and is a perfect fusion between introspection and creative exploration of the outside world, successfully combining dynamism and cohesion and showcasing Madebit’s incredible talent.

This one is for the fence sitters who’re afraid to give it a try, whatever it might be that they want in this very moment. Turn your speakers on or grab your headphones and play Shots by Tasty ft. Loop Instinct, an empowering concoction of funk, hip-hop and indie pop.

Andrew Keeler (aka Tasty), from New Orleans, gave it a shot himself by recording this track in his home studio, and he certainly did the right thing. This is an infectious melody with a rich, pulsating rhythm made of different sonic layers complimented by a powerful performance and lyrics which engage the listener on a poetic, aural and emotional level.

“Whoa, take another shot now / You gon’ regret it if you don’t throw it down / Baby, just throw it down / Take another shot with me”, these are the words Tasty sings to his listeners, in a smart wordplay that hints at basketball shots, alcohol shots and personal attempts at something.

The dynamic, rolling bassline has an undeniable, unique groove that makes this song feel truly authentic, with a constant build-up to the chorus, the driving momentum where you can’t help shouting along to this catchy anthem.

The snapping beat is the heart of Shots, providing a contagious backdrop for the listener to vibe with, and as the verses unfold, the dynamic interplay between the various elements of this song becomes apparent, with each genre influence taking turns in the spotlight.

The track itself is a musical invitation to embrace confidence and take chances without hesitation, as the music intertwines seamlessly with the lyrics, enhancing the overall thematic unity of the track.
